Get paid for power you (don’t) use

Virtual Power Plants pay you for sharing power from your home — your battery, smart thermostat, EV, or even a smart plug. Enter your ZIP to see what’s available where you live, and start getting paid for your power.

What is a VPP?

A Virtual Power Plant is many homes' energy devices — smart plugs, batteries, thermostats, EV chargers — that the grid can call on (or temporarily turn off) during peak demand. You opt in, the grid leans on your devices for short moments, and you get paid.

How much can I earn?

Depends on the program and what devices you have. A home battery in an active VPP can earn hundreds of dollars a year in bill credits. A smart thermostat enrollment is often $25–150/year. Most programs cost nothing to join.

What does Communal Grid do?

We track every VPP program in North America and which devices each program accepts. Tell us your ZIP — we’ll show you the programs available, what they pay, and how to enroll.
